In
1982, having completed his studies in 'cello at the Madrid
Conservatory and the Escuela Superior de Canto, Faustino Nuñez
travelled to Vienna where he studied composition and 'cello.
In
1985 he began his studies in musicology at the University
of Vienna where he obtained his licenciate in 1989.
In 1990 he travelled to Havana where he began a study of the
influence of Cuba and America on Spanish music. He returned
to Madrid as director of marketing for the label Deutsche
Grammophon.
He
left the discographic industry in order to complete two music
books for SM publishers and wrote "The
Greatest Music step by step", "Flamenco styles from
A to Z" and "All the Music of Cuba".
Antonio
Gades requested he select
the musical arrangements for the ballet "Fuenteovejuna"
and contracted him as guitarist with the company between 1994
and 1998.
He
also worked for Antonio Márquez ("After Carmen")
and together with Javier Barón ("Baile de Hierro",
"Dime") and as guitarist with his fellow countryman
Carlos Nuñez.
He
is professor at several classical and flamenco music courses,
and producer of recordings of the carnival music of Cádiz:
"La Chirigota del Selu" and "Operación
chirigota".
He
is the author of the books: "Music between Cuba and Spain",
and "The Cuban origins of the tango and its arrival in
Spain", in collaboration with María Teresa Linares
and José Luis Ortiz Nuevo, respectively.
With José Manuel Gamboa, he has written "Camarón,
life and work" and
is currently preparing a catalogue of the music of Madrid's
Municipal Library (5000 works, mostly unpublished, originating
in the 18th
Century Spanish lyrical theatre) as well as completing a study
of the origins of flamenco in Cádiz.
