Antonio
Suárez Salazar, Guadiana,
was born in Badajoz in 1955.
He belongs to one of the most prestigious family sagas in
flamenco; the flamenco singing family of Porrina
of Badajoz. He is the brother of Ramón el Portugues,
nephew to Porrinas de Badajoz and cousin to La Negra and Juan
Salazar.
He
was barely seventeen when he gave his debut at the tablao
in Madrid, Café de Chinitas. During the 1980s he dedicated
himself to working the tablaos such as Torres Bermejas and
Los Canasteros.
He
is one of the most sought after singers for flamenco dance:
El Güito, La Tati, Javier Baron,
La Tolea and more recently Merche Esmeralda and Antonio Canales,
for whose company he usually composes. His collaboration has
also been sought for the international shows of Enrique Morente
and the guitarist Pepe Habichuela who includes Guadiana on
his CD “Yerbagüena” (Nuevos Medios 2001).
This
cantaor from Badajoz recorded "Cuando
el río suena", his first disc in 1999,
and “Brillo De Luna” in
May 2002. Guadiana is also open to new musical experiences
as he demonstrates by his participation in Chanson Flamenca,
a project in which a variety of cantaores interpret French
chanson style.
In
2004 he performed during the PIRINEO SUR (XIII International
Festival of Cultures) in Antonio Canales work “Carmen-Carmela”,
and also collaborated on Paco de Lucía’s
CD “Cositas Buenas”.
In
2005 he collaborated on the recording by Tomate,
“Agua Dulce” .
As
a composer his work has also been acclaimed by colleagues,
especially Antonio Canales, of whose company he is a member,
and for whom he has written the music for many shows. He has
also composed works which are far removed from traditional
styles, among them, a few for Pata Negra.
