Iván
Vargas was born in the
Sacromonte, in the cave La Rocío to be precise, where
he took his first steps at he hand of his family, the
Mayas. He therefore belongs to
the dynasty of great dancers among whom we find such names
as Manolete, Juan Andrés Maya, Mario Maya, and of course,
accompanied by Juan Maya “Marote”.
While
still a child he became known to a wide audience, participating
in national television programmes such as Andrés Caparrós’
“Quédate con la llave” at the age of 4,
“Lo que yo te cante” presented by Marifé
de Triana, at the age of 8, along with Elena Chaves. “Hablando
se entiende la basca”, “Quédate con la
copla” and “El Trampolín.”
He
has participated in numerous works and shows staged by his
uncle Juan Andrés Maya,
most notably: Pasión, Contrastes, Cautivo and El Flamenco
de un marginado which had its debut at Madrid’s Apolo
theatre.
He
has also had an important participation in the 1992 Bienal
of Seville.
Another of his outstanding contributions was with the Fura
Del’s Baus in the work Muerte
en Granada by Federico García
Lorca, where he shared the stage with artists of the stature
of Javier de la Torre, Eva la Hierbabuena, Beatriz Martín
and once again his uncle Juan Andrés. He appeared in
the Veranos del Corral along with Fuensanta “La Moneta”
Outside
our frontiers he has performed in Italy and the United States.
In the latter he was with Curro Albayzín’s group
marking the naming of Antonio Banderas as ambassador to Andalucía.
