Pepe
Maya was born in the heart of an artistic family in the Albaycín
neighbourhood of Granada. He is the son of Juan
Maya “Marote” and
nephew of Manolete and Mario Maya.
He learned to play guitar with his father Juan Maya “Marote”
who also transferred his passion for flamenco singing and
dance to him.
He moved to Madrid at an early age, making his debut as guitarist
with the María
Rosa Ballet with whom he remained
for four years.

He has worked at the tablaos of Las Brujas and Zambra, in
the latter with the dancers Joaquín Cortés,
Antonio Canales, Javier Latorre, Antonio Reyes and Cristóbal
Reyes.
- He specialised in composing for accompanying flamenco
dance and song, composing the music for the shows of Manuela
Vargas, “El
Güito”, Manolete
and Merche Esmeralda.
- First guitarist for El Güito’s work “Raíces
Gitanas”
- First guitarist for Manolete’s work “Flamenco
Soy”, performing at some of the world’s most
important stages with this company, such as Rome’s
Termas de Caracalla
- Appeared four times at the Bienal of Seville
- Three times at the Granada International Festival of Music
and Dance
- Madrid’s Autumn festival
- Cumbre Flamenca
- Festivals of Lille, Geneva, Tokyo, London, Seminars Music
of New York, Paris, Berlin, and the Middle East etc.
- Performed with El Güito in Madrid’s Royal Theatre,
the first time flamenco dance was presented at this theatre
- Worked in the Granada flamenco tablaos Jardines Neptuno
with Maite Galán and Reina Mora with Angustillas

- Has accompanied the flamenco singers: El
Indio Gitano “El Moro”,
Chocolate de Santa Fé, Juan Cantero, Enrique “El
Extremeño”, Talegón de Córdoba
etc.
- In 2000 he recorded a live CD in New York with the singers
Sebastián Román and Jesús “El
Almendro”.
- Composed the music for, and performed in the work presented
by El Güito and Manolete
for Madrid’s Centro Cultural de la Villa
- Lope de Vega Theatre (Bienal of Seville)
- Juan
Andrés Maya’s
work in homage to Carmen Amaya in the Isabel la Católica
theatre, Granada
- Performed with the María Rosa ballet company in
Siberia touring from East to West where flamenco was performed
live for the first time.
- Participated in the music for the works “Solo Flamenco”,
“A Puerta Abierta” and “Apología
de Carmen Amaya” by El Güito
